Phil Capelle's Play Your Best 8-Ball. Great book, and it's huge too.

I just finished reading Advanced Pool, by George Fels. I picked it up at the library. It's a relatively quick read with sections on straight pool, 8-ball, and 9-ball. The largest section is all about 14.1, but it's very helpful to read if you're learning position play in 8-ball. A lot of the principles in pattern play for straight pool can be applied to 8-ball.

This book is good for a "C" or "B" speed player. Are you having trouble where you break and run to the 8-ball...but leave yourself tough since your opponent still has all his balls still on the table? So you kick and sell out...and your opponent just runs out a wide open table for the win. Good shotmakers typically hit this road block before taking their game up a notch.

Advanced Pool covers this strategy well; discussing when it's time to run out and when to play safe. However, this is not a book about playing defense all the time. This is where the straight pool influence can help...since it deals so much with being a good "mover" and negotiating layouts. It covers advanced pattern play which will help with break and runs. If you have trouble deciding which ball to shoot first on a wide open table, this book can help.

I disagreed with a few of his ideas about english and multiple rail kicks...but his pattern play and layout assessments were spot on.
