use a stripe ball wiht stripe aligned vertically as a cb or use spotted cb so you can see if cb is spinning or rolling straight to make sure you are hitting dead center. have good follow through, allow your tip come to rest on the cloth about 6 inches past the cb and look to see if the tip of the cue is in a straight line and not wondered off center. shoot closer straight in shots then slowly separate the cb and ob making it harder. try to concentrate on a straight stroke.

Excellent advice from badandy. Basically you need to make sure that you are hitting the cueball without english because if there is unwanted english on the cueball, it will throw the object ball off the and cause a missed shot.

Have someone view you (or video) from directly in front. See if the cue is traveling in a straight line. Having your dominant eye over the cue helps with hitting the center of the cue ball. The other tips above are very good, using a striped ball will tell you what side of the cue ball you are hitting, but wont tell you if you are movong the stick in the direction you think you are. Video, or a competent instructor/friend will help. Most people are shocked when they see a video of themselves for the first time... It saves alot of time.

this drill might help to check if you're hitting the cb correctly (use a stripe ball if you wanna see how it reacts)

just hit the CB dead straight to A and cb must get back to B (where you started) in the middle of 14 & 15balls, must avoid hitting them.
